Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) and chemical desulfurization systems operate in one of the most corrosive and abrasive environments in process industry. The combination of acidic slurry (pH 3-6), high chloride content from coal-derived HCl, gypsum and limestone slurry abrasion, and temperature gradients creates a unique challenge for every wetted surface. Each FGD component — absorber tanks, slurry pumps, piping, and dewatering equipment — faces the combined attack of chemical corrosion and mechanical abrasion simultaneously.

Molecular weight 3-6 million g/mol provides exceptional abrasion resistance (10x better than steel), near-zero water absorption, and complete chemical inertness to acidic FGD slurries including chloride and sulfate solutions. Service life exceeds 15 years in FGD absorber service.
For FGD slurry pump impellers, pipe bends, and tank linings, natural rubber and synthetic rubber compounds provide excellent abrasion resistance with good chemical resistance. Zhili formulates compounds specifically for FGD chemistry — high chloride content, acidic pH, and temperature cycling from ambient to 60C. Butyl rubber is preferred for absorber linings due to superior H2SO4 and HCl resistance.
For limestone grinding in FGD ball mills, standard high-chromium alloys suffer galvanic corrosion in acidic slurry. Zhili's LC-FGD alloy (2-3% Cr, optimized C content) provides the right balance of corrosion resistance (Cr2O3 passive layer) and abrasion resistance for wet limestone grinding.
For slurry pump volutes, impeller leading edges, and fan blades, NiCrBSi (Colmonoy-type) hardfacing overlays applied by PTA or oxy-acetylene welding provide excellent resistance to combined corrosive-abrasive wear in high-chloride FGD environments.
Limestone-gypsum slurry absorbs SO2 at pH 5-6. Tank walls, spray headers, and mist eliminators face slurry droplet impact abrasion and chemical corrosion. UHMWPE or rubber linings are the standard solution.
Wet ball milling of limestone to 90% <75um for slurry preparation. Grinding media and mill liners face three-body abrasion from angular limestone in acidic slurry (pH 4-5).
Limestone and gypsum slurry pumps at high flow rates (500-2000 m3/h). Pump impellers and volutes experience severe slurry abrasion — rubber-lined or Ni-based hardfaced components are optimal.
Gypsum slurry dewatering in centrifuges and belt filters. 316L stainless steel or polyurethane components resist gypsum crystal abrasion and residual chloride from wash water.
Wet, acidic flue gas handling at 50-80C with fine gypsum and fly ash particulate. Fan blades require erosion resistance plus corrosion protection — stainless steel or Ni-based alloy overlays.
Rotary atomizer and absorber vessel in semi-dry FGD. Lime/limestone slurry spray-dried at 150-200C. Vessel walls and atomizer components face corrosive gas attack and abrasive particulate erosion.
